The Terror of Objects

In those days I knew too much

about objects: not any particular object

but every thing, all

that had mass and form and weight, shape and heft

burned into my mind, and I knew them.

I could not stop watching and noticing each slant of wall, cleft of door,

the shoes worn by men and women, writing paraphernalia, cars.

The way some think only of sex, the rigging of desire,

I could not stop noticing the danger of objects — chairs, tables, lamps, mirrors

even cups bore weight that could harm, and gravity unpredictable,

gravity has never been proven, only intimated, repeated,

each object shining eerie.

I could not remember the world before violence

when doors worked like water,

iridescent surfaces, ghostlier flint of winter.

I could not forget that even holy books can damage if thrown

and that everything can be thrown, the body breaks down,

accidents happen and you kneel and your mother smiles,

telling you sit still, he did nothing wrong, water

sliding through folding leaves,

tarnished, childish soul.
